FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why are you called Shack Out Back?

We launched with the name Waconda Broadcasting which was named after the now defunct Waconda Seed company, which itself was named after the Waconda Springs, near Cawker City, Kansas. After World War Two, our grandfather Francis Brinker founded the Waconda Seed company (not the Waconda Seed from Oregon, founded in 1979) with Carlos Bingesser near Cawker City, Kansas in the middle part of the last century. In the post WW2 boom, suburban families needed lawns for kids to play, meanwhile wheat farmers were planting more, and increasing their fields to supply food, pushing wheat prices down. Waconda Seed sold "Native Grass Seeds", with the tagline "Conserve Soil with Sod". The original Waconda Spring is gone. With the completion of the Glen Elder Dam in 1968, the spring was lost, and now sits beneath the Waconda Reservoir, between the towns of Glen Elder and Cawker City.

We chose the name Waconda to honor a bit of our family history, and our amazing grandfather. However, Marvel and their super marketing has made Wakonda, from the Black Panther Movie an iconic name. We needed to change. When we launched our first podcast, I built a studio inside of a small aluminum shack behind our house and christened it the Shack-Out-Back Studio. So, after little thought, or deep consideration, we have rebranded as the Shack-Out-Back Studio. You can find our shows at shackoutback.studio and listen live HERE.

How do you create the shows?

All of the hosts use Apple MacBook computers. Hosts use a variety of different equipment. Our main studio mic is the Heil PR-40 feeding into a Behringer Xenyx mixer, and then into Logic Pro X. Sound effects are created on an iPad Air 2 using the sound board app. Our site is hosted by SquareSpace.
